Analyst Training in the Bank Sector

Track 1: July 30-31 • Track 2: August 1-3
Both in Charlottesville, Virginia

Now in its 15th year, and newly expanded, Analyst Training in the Bank Sector introduces you to the broad spectrum of topics required to analyze depository institutions in today's changed banking sector.

As the benchmark training program for professionals who want to analyze, advise, work in or regulate banks, Analyst Training consists of two sequential track. You can elect to attend either or attend both to get the most comprehensive introduction to the banking sector you can find.


Track 1: Inside Bank Accounting Practices (July 30-31)

From balance sheet management techniques to derivatives and hedging to the fundamentals of M&A accounting, you'll come to understand how banks account for and report their more complex operating results.

Led by a tandem instructional team of a renowned academic and an independent practitioner, Inside Bank Accounting Practices consists of lectures and case studies that provide you with both the theoretical background and the real-world context you need to:

  • Identify questions in bank accounting and analysis that arise from management discretion in reporting and disclosure
  • Understand amortized cost accounting vs. fair value accounting and how it affects a bank's exposure
  • Know the accounting rules and disclosures associated with the reporting of a bank's credit risks
  • Analyze the fair value accounting and disclosures for financial instruments, investment securities, mortgages and other servicing rights
  • Understand the accounting for derivatives and hedging, and how banks use derivatives to mitigate risk

Prerequisites: Inside Bank Accounting presumes familiarity with basic accounting and finance concepts, as well as a working knowledge of bank financial statements. Pre-program reading will be assigned prior to the seminar to ensure an interactive and successful learning experience.


Track 2: Bank Analyst Training (August 1-3)

Bank Analyst Training puts you in a post-graduate learning environment led by an independent, hand-picked faculty of active bank executives, Wall Street practitioners and consultants.

Coursework combines lectures, discussions and case studies to give you the benefit of hands-on training and a comprehensive perspective on the sector.

You'll be able to:

  • Recognize and assess the key economic and competitive forces affecting the sector
  • Critically analyze bank balance sheets and income statements to identify key sources of opportunity and risk
  • Identify and understand the sector's fundamental performance ratios
  • Describe the process of evaluating loan portfolios, how determine their impact on performance and spot potential red flags
  • Recognize strategies for accessing capital markets, managing capital, and assessing their implications for a financial institution
  • Understand valuation techniques, tools and the practical application of those tools

In addition, Analyst Training provides a unique opportunity to network with your peers from across the financial services industry in a collegial setting.

Prerequisites: Bank Analyst Training presumes familiarity with basic accounting and finance concepts, including financial ratios and discounted cash flow analysis. Prior to the program, participants will receive materials for the program case studies as well as reading for participants who are new to the sector.
